BATHROOM EXHAUST FANS w/LIGHTS FAQ
- Q) What is a sone?
- A) A sone is a unit of perceived loudness. An exhaust fan
rated at 4.0 sones is twice as loud as one rated at
2.0 sones. One sone is roughly equivalent to the sound produced by a quiet refrigerator.
- Q) Which bathroom exhaust fan is the quietest?
- A) We have two models of bathroom exhaust fans that are rated
at only 0.40 sones, which are the quietest ventilation fans on the market. They
are models PPA-500-VL and PPA-700-VL.
- Q) What does CFM stand for?
- A) CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. If a bathroom ceiling
exhaust fan is rated at 70 CFM, this means that it can remove up to 70 cubic feet
of air per minute from a bathroom.
- Q) How do I know what size exhaust fan to purchase for my bathroom?
- A) Bathroom exhaust fans are certified by the volume of air "exhausted" out of the room within a certain period of time (CFM). To find the recommended fan capacity for your bathroom, simply multiply the bathroom square footage by 1.1 for an 8ft ceiling or multiply by 1.5 for a 9ft ceiling. For example, if the square footage of your 6ft by 10ft bathroom is 60 square feet, then you should use a bathroom exhaust fan with a rating of at least 66 CFM if the ceiling is 8 feet or 90 CFM if the ceiling is 9 feet.
- Q) How does a bathroom exhaust fan incorporate a night light into its design?
- A) In addition to using a standard light source the exhaust
fan also has a small 7W incandescent light bulb located behind the light diffuser
which provides enough light to see in the bathroom at night. If the exhaust fan
has both of these light sources, this means that the exhaust fan needs to be controlled
by 3 different switches: one for the fan, one for the standard light source, and
one for the night light.
- Q) What is the purpose of the heater in a bathroom exhaust fan?
- A) During the winter months your bathroom may feel especially
cold when stepping out of the shower or tub. If this is the case, you may want
to warm up your bathroom a bit just before taking a shower or bath and keep this
extra electric heat on until after you have dressed.
- Q) What makes a bathroom exhaust fan with a light energy efficient?
- A) In most cases a bathroom exhaust fan will improve its
energy efficiency by using fluorescent light bulbs instead of incandescent light
bulbs.
- Q) What does it mean that a bathroom exhaust fan with a light is CA Title
24 Compliant?
- A) Because the residents of the state of California use so much electrical
energy compared to what the electrical utilities can supply the state legislature
of California has adopted several energy requirements regarding energy usage in
new and remodeled residential dwellings that include the use of energy-efficient
lighting. These energy requirements are spelled out in a California law called
Title 24. Since the passage of this law a variety of residential lighting fixtures
must now be labeled as CA Title 24 Compliant in order to be used in any new or
remodeled residential construction in California.
- Q) What should I do to eliminate moisture buildup in my bathroom?
- A) Run your bathroom exhaust fan during your bath or shower and then for 30 minutes after to eliminate moisture buildup. Replacing the fan's on/off wall switch with a timer switch can help you effectively do this.
